Now that you've handled the problem from the inside out, it's time to get you on a skincare routine that helps keep acne at bay and gets rid of Hyperpigmentation. Going to divide this routine for AM/PM.
PM Routine
Step 1: Cleanse
This part feels unnecessary to even mention but nonetheless it is still important. Start by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, excess oil, and impurities. Gently massage the cleanser onto damp skin, then rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Don't overdo it on the cleanser. Personally, I always reach for Cera-Ve or Cetaphil. Simple and cost-effective. If you wear makeup, consider double cleansing with an oil-based cleanser.
Step 2: Tretinoin (Check out our Beginner's Guide to Tretinoin)
Tretinoin is the most effective treatment for acne and anti-aging. However, it is also the most harsh and has an initial purging phase. Begin with a lower concentration like .025 and gradually increase as your skin tolerates it. Tretinoin helps increase cell turnover, unclog pores, and reduce fine lines, acne, and hyperpigmentation. If using Tret, first apply a moisturizer as a buffer. Then wait ~15 mins and apply a pea sized amount of Tret. Wait another ~15 mins to let the Tretinoin set and then apply another layer of moisturizer. .
Step 3: (On Alternating Nights) AHA/BHA Exfoliant
Choose either an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid) exfoliant, depending on your skin's needs. AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid help smooth skin texture and fade hyperpigmentation, while BHAs like salicylic acid are effective for treating acne and unclogging pores. Apply the exfoliant according to the product instructions, usually in the evening, and let it absorb for the recommended time. Never mix with Tretinoin.
Step 4: Moisturizer
After allowing the exfoliant or Tret to absorb, apply a moisturizer suitable for your skin type. Look for a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that provides hydration without clogging pores. Gently massage the moisturizer into your face and neck until fully absorbed.
Personally, I prefer to leave a day in between nights that I am using any sort of actives. You need to listen to you skin and know when you should take a break from products. If you apply actives every night, you can damage your skin barrier and even possibly cause more breakouts. If your skin is ever red and irritated, you should stop using active ingredients and instead apply a layer of Aquaphor to calm your skin. So my PM routine usually looks like this:
Day 1: Tretinoin
Day 2: No Actives, Only Moisturizer
Day 3: AHA/BHA
Day 4: No Actives, Only Moisturizer
Day 5: Repeat
AM Routine
Step 1: Cleanse
Step 2: Vitamin C Serum
Apply a few drops of vitamin C serum to your face and neck. Apply to dry skin. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps brighten the skin, fade hyperpigmentation, and protect against free radicals. Gently pat the serum into the skin and allow it to fully absorb before moving on.
Step 3: Moisturize
Step 4: Sunscreen
In the morning, follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen is crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, prevent further hyperpigmentation, and maintain overall skin health. Apply an adequate amount to your face and any exposed areas, and reapply every two hours or as needed throughout the day.
Consistency and Gradual Introduction
It's important to introduce each product gradually into your skincare routine, especially tretinoin and exfoliants, to allow your skin to adjust. Start with lower concentrations and frequencies, then gradually increase as your skin becomes accustomed to the active ingredients. Be patient and consistent, as results may take time to become visible.
